Topic: AMPing Up Archaeology: Conserving Heritage Through Archaeological Management Plans

Ontario is a world leader in the development and implementation of archaeological management plans. Pioneered in the 1980s, as tools to assist municipal planners in the stewardship of archaeological heritage in accordance with provisions of the Ontario Planning Act, AMPs have evolved significantly thanks to the advent of geographical information systems (GIS) technology. Not only does this facilitate integration with GIS platforms employed by municipal planning staff, but it also expedites the synthesis and analysis of a wide range of environmental and archaeological data in the evaluation of archaeological potential. This presentation will illustrate the process of AMP development using recent projects undertaken by ASI for York Region, the Town of Caledon, and the County of Simcoe and will highlight some of the high-level insights about human land-use patterns over time that can be derived from archaeological potential modeling.
