Circles of Interaction: The Wendat and Their Neighbours in the Time of Champlain is the joint symposium of the Ontario Archaeological Society and the Eastern States Archaeological Federation. The conference will be held from Oct. 16 to 18 in Midland, Ontario - the heart of historic Huronia. As we mark the 400th anniversary of Samuel de Champlain's sojourn in the region, we wish to examine the relationships between the Wendat, the French, and their neighbours in the region.

The Huron-Wendat Nation will host a day-long session investigating the relationship between the Wendat and the people known as St. Lawrence Iroquoians. A half-day session will be devoted to honouring the legacy of renowned Champlain scholar Conrad Heidenreich. A second half-day session will examine the archaeology and cultural geography of Champlain and other early French explorers, missionaries, and traders in Ontario. Finally, scholars from a number of different disciplines will share results of recent research on a variety of aspects of the Wendat past.

Participants will have the opportunity to participate in tours of local museums and archaeological sites. A workshop hosted by the Ontario Heritage Trust and the Ontario Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sport will examine how heritage in the region can be better protected.
