Topic: In search of Carhagouha: The Tay Point Archaeology Project
The Tay Point Archaeology Project (TPA) involves a multiyear program of historical and archaeological research. Beginning in 2014, students from Wilfrid Laurier University have been active in the investigation of Ahatsistari (BeGx-76), an early 17th century Huron-Wendat village site. Archaeological and historical evidence collected to date suggest that Ahatsistari is a good candidate for the historically referenced village Carhagouha, visited and described (circa 1615) by Samuel de Champlain and Recollect priest, Joseph LeCaron, and home to Onorotandi and Auoindaon, Huron-Wendat headman who controlled trade with the Saguenay and St. Lawrence rivers.
